Woodthorpe Karate Club

Woodthorpe Karate Club is based at Woodthorpe School on Lewis Road and is run by Terry Johnston and Steve Lewis. The club has been running at the school for over 6 years and is part of the World Traditional Karate Association. The sessions run on Monday evenings between 6pm and 8pm and is open to all members of the community from 5 years upwards. There are no enrollment fees and there is only a nominal charge of £2.00 per session for the classes. The first taster lesson is FREE and is open to new members who just want to see whether Karate is suitable for them with no committment. Both Terry and Steve are Black belt qualified coaches with many years experience. Both hold currrent CRB certificates as well as First Aid and Health and Safety Certificates.

The club has taken part in the World Traditional Karate Association (WTKA) World Championships for the past few years collecting along the way bronze and silver medals. This year the World Championships are taking place at Marrina de Carrara in Tuscany, Italy and the team will be taking 4 young people from the local area to compete in the tournament. Last year over 100 countries took part in the event which was also observed by the members of the Olympic committee who will decide whether this style of martial arts will be included in the 2016 Olympic Games.

However the team will be looking for sponsorship to assist with the £2.5K that it costs to enter the tournament, travel, accomodation and meals. So far the team have been raising money by organising "bag fills" at supermarkets and are hoping to get to do 5 more before the tournament in Autumn. They are also organising a sponsored bike ride and walk in Rother Valley Country park during the Easter Holidays.

"The club was established to encourage young people from the local community to participate in sport and exercise as well as build confidence and self esteem. When we entered the World Championships you could see the pride and accomplishment the young people had of representing their community, their city and their country" - Steve Lewis.
