Woodthorpe Junior Angling Club was set up by local parents, young people and Woodthorpe Development Trust because there was very little local provision for youngsters wanting to fish. Working together the club was formed in the summer of 2008 and has since been involved in getting more local youngsters involved in fishing but also got more parents on board supporting the anglers at fishing matches and day trips.

 

Angling is the most popular participation sport in the UK and getting young people involved at an early age gets many young people away from their local environment and into the countryside where they can relax and enjoy peaceful surroundings whilst honing their skills around the fish pond.

 

Last year young people from Woodthorpe, Richmond, Stradbroke, Woodhouse and Intake took part in a number of day trips and fishing matches across the city. Supported by ADB Level 2 qualified coaches Garry Wills and Ryszard Szumski (who work for the Trust) young people were given tuition at the bank side.

 

Youngsters from City School and Woodthorpe JAC members also took part in an Intergenerational Fishing match in October 2009 at Aston Ponds near Sheffield. This match pitted the skills of young anglers with those of the Over 50’s club.

Live Wirz Five a side and Friday Nite Live Wirz Street Games      

  

Live Wirz was set up 3 years ago as a Wednesday night sports activity for youths in the area as a response to information from the police. Woodthorpe Development Trust organised coaching staff to run the sessions every Wednesday evening to provide a positive platform for young people to get together and play football. Since that time Live Wirz has expanded and employs 7 part time staff to run multi sports activities on a Friday evening and during school holiday periods.
All the activities are free and accessible to young people between 8 years and 19 years. Most of the coaching staff are local residents that have undergone statutory training with the FA and various other bodies and all staff are CRB checked.

FREE 5 a side football every Wednesday evening 6 - 7pm at Woodthorpe School (Chadwick Road ball court).
